Hydrographic surveys, a responsibility of the National Ocean Service's (NOS) Coast Survey, precisely measure tidal depths and bottom configuration of water bodies. This information is critically important to the production of Nautical Charts and is also useful for commercial fishing industry and coastal zone management.
The primary product of a hydrographic survey is a map called a Smooth Sheet, on which is plotted relevant shorelines (from coastal surveys) and water depths corrected to an appropriate tidal datum (usually mean low water). Digital data (point soundings collected since 1930) are stored in a massive archive available from NOS on CD-ROM.
The NOS MapFinder Preview Demonstration contains an accurate index of most of the 11,700 surveys in the NOS archive. Users can use this index to identify specific surveys and survey time periods for ordering digital data. The associated product is the actual map portrayal of the surveys in the NOS MapFinder. Surveys are mapped so that the most recent appear "on top." The image on this page is an example map from NOS MapFinder.
