The Visible and Infrared Spin Scan Radiometer (VISSR) operates on the Geostationary Operational Environment Satellite (GOES). The VISSR instrument simultaneously scans the Earth's atmosphere, land surfaces, and oceans in several different wavelengths. The data from the instrument can be viewed as either a photographic image or received in digital form on computer tapes.
Visible and infrared imagery is generated on a half-hour schedule except when there are periods of severe storm conditions. Then the imagery schedule will change to one of the predefined severe storm schedules. The imagery is available from either the visible or infrared channels.
Wind speeds and direction are able to be computed using several sequential images. The motion of clouds at specific heights in the atmosphere are measured and the wind speeds and direction are derived.
