Abstract:

Hydrologic investigations atlases (HA Series) are maps developed from basic data collection and special studies, and are used to present a wide variety of hydrologic and hydrogeologic facts concerning the Nation's water resources.

Atlases are either black-and-white or multicolored maps showing a wide range of water resources information, such as depth to groundwater, floods, irrigated acreage, producing aquifers, water availability, surface water discharge, chemical or mineral content of water, surface impoundments and water temperature. Maps vary as to the number of sheets required to depict the hydrology presented in sheet sizes, and in scale. Principal maps are most frequently presented at a scale of 1:24,000, however much smaller scales like 1:250,000 are used for larger areas of study.

More than 600 hydrologic atlases have been published. Most of these have been prepared in cooperation with State, county, and municipal agencies. Atlases usually cover natural hydrologic units, such as drainage basins. Relevant data, information, and analyses that support the principal atlas maps are often shown on smaller maps, graphs, and tables. Other supporting information is often included, notably photographs and references.
