The National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) is the newest Combat Support Agency of the Department of Defense. It was established by the National Imagery and Mapping Act of 1996, effective 1 October 1996. NIMA incorporates the Defense Mapping Agency, the Central Imagery Office, and the Defense Dissemination Program Office, in their entirety; the mission and functions of CIA's National Photographic Interpretation Center; and imagery exploitation, dissemination and processing elements of the Defense Intelligence Agency, National Reconnaissance Office, and Defense Airborne Reconnaissance Office. NIMA is also designated a part of the U.S. Intelligence Community.
NIMA provides coherent management of U.S. imaging and mapping capabilities to meet the timely, accurate and precise imagery and geospatial information needs in support of national security objectives. NIMA's customers will be better able to gain and maintain the information edge in the inevitable conflicts, natural disasters and international crises of the future. NIMA's goal is to convert today's vertically-integrated imagery and mapping production system to a "client-server" system where imagery and geospatial data will move in "near real time" from collection through distribution in a totally softcopy, digital format. NIMA will grab information bits from national, military, and commercial sensors, electronically "push" them into data warehouses, and provide customers with the hardware and software tools to "pull" and process these bits to fit specific needs. A goal identified in NIMA's strategic planning process is the evaluation of emerging commercial hardware and software systems as well as commercial sources of imagery to improve service to NIMA's customers.
