Overview of State Regulations

          Kentucky has adopted the federal asbestos regulations. Jefferson County has asbestos requirements as well.

          State/Federal Agencies Involved with the State Asbestos Program

          The following agencies/entities have asbestos-related regulatory and enforcement responsibilities in Kentucky:

          A. The Kentucky Natural Resources Cabinet, Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Air Quality, Special Programs Branch (general phone (502) 573-3382) is involved in the following state/federal asbestos enforcement/requirements:
        • training courses - The state training course program for asbestos personnel is partially approved by the EPA Region 4. For supervisors, a state orientation class is required in Kentucky.

        • pre-abatement notifications/approvals - The Building Inspection Office must be contacted for demolition projects.

          Laboratory Requirements

          There are no state-specific accreditation requirements for laboratories and analysts performing asbestos analyses.

          Federal regulations require laboratories and analysts performing asbestos analyses to be properly accredited. Contact the two following organizations for accreditation information:
