State Regulations

          Nevada has adopted the federal asbestos regulations. Two counties, Washoe and Clark, have requirements in addition to state requirements. These two counties are NESHAP-delegated by the EPA Region 9.

          State/Federal Agencies Involved with the State Asbestos Program

          The following agencies/entities have asbestos-related regulatory and enforcement responsibilities in Nevada:

          A. The Nevada Department of Business and Industries, Division of Industrial Relations, Occupational Safety and Health Administration Enforcement Section (contact phone (702) 687-5240) is involved in the following state/federal asbestos enforcement/requirements:
        • certifications
        • licensing
        • pre-abatement notifications/approvals
        • AHERA/schools
        • OSHA/worker safety/medical surveillance
        • site audit/inspections
        • laboratory and analyst requirements/certifications
        • sampling/site clearance requirements - The state requirements are more stringent than federal regulations.

          B. The Department of Environmental Quality, Bureau of Waste Management (general phone (702) 687-4670) is involved in the following state/federal asbestos enforcement/requirements:
        • permits (landfills)
        • site audit/inspections (landfills)

        • disposal

          Laboratory Requirements

          There are no state-specific accreditation requirements for laboratories and analysts performing asbestos analyses.

          Federal regulations require laboratories and analysts performing asbestos analyses to be properly accredited. Contact the two following organizations for accreditation information:
