Abstract:

The National Ocean Service (NOS) is the primary civil agency within the U.S. Government responsible for the health and safety of our nation's coastal and oceanic environment. As part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), NOS provides a wide range of products and services (including publications and reports) established on the best scientific basis, for the protection of life, property, and the environment. NOS Operational Units include:

Office of Ocean and Earth Sciences (OES) - conducts advanced studies on global sea level using satellite data, maintains a national network of water-level observing stations, and is pioneering the development of real-time monitoring of water levels in harbors and ports.

Office of Ocean Resources Conservation and Assessment (ORCA) - program activities include: measuring the status and trends of environmental quality of U.S. coastal areas and the biological consequences of pollutants and other stresses on living organisms and coastal ecosystems; coordinating research, evaluation, and planning efforts to minimize the environmental effects of oil and hazardous materials spills and hazardous waste sites; and more.

Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management (OCCRM) - administers the provisions of The Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972, which established a vigorous partnership with the states to develop comprehensive management programs for our coastal resources.

National Geodetic Survey (NGS) - develops and maintains the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS) using advanced geodetic, photogrammetric, and remote sensing techniques.

Office of Aeronautical Charting (OAC) - prints and distributes all NOAA nautical charts and maps; Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) public sales aeronautical and nautical charts; and maps compiled by the National Weather Service.

Office of Coast Survey (OCS) - manages the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's nautical chart data collection and information programs.

Coastal Services Center (CSC) - identifies, develops, and facilitates the use of technologies and information that support use and management of coastal resources.
