Technology Description:

The B.E.S.T. Process is a patented solvent extraction technology utilizing secondary or tertiary amines as the solvent.

The key to success of the B.E.S.T. process is the B.E.S.T. solvents' property of inverse miscibility; below 80 degrees Fahrenheit, the process solvent is soluble in water (hydrophilic) and above 80 degrees Fahrenheit, the process solvent is insoluble in water (hydrophobic). Therefore, cold solvent can extract water and water-soluble compounds and warm solvent can extract organic contaminants, such as: PCBs, pesticides, semivolatile organics, and VOCs.

When treating non-pumpable wastes (soils), the process is configured as a batch extraction system. Extraction is continuous when treating pumpable wastes (sludges & sediments). Solvent recovery and recycle are continuous.

The B.E.S.T. solvent extraction process operates at near ambient pressures and temperatures, uses off-the-shelf process equipment, and has no air emissions. Treated products from the B.E.S.T. process include: water suitable for discharge, oil for recycle as fuel, and solids that can be returned to the site as backfill.
Performance Status/
Limitations:

Performance Status:

The B.E.S.T. process has been successfully demonstrated at bench scale, pilot scale, and at full scale. A full-scale B.E.S.T. unit was used to treat PCB-contaminated sludges at the General Refining Superfund site. A full-scale soil treatment unit designed to remove organics from radioactive mixed wastes is scheduled for startup in 1996.

Five pilot-scale units have been built and operated to treat soils, sludges, and sediments contaminated with PCBs, PAHs, VOCs, and pesticides, and various other organic contaminants.

          Limitations:

The B.E.S.T. solvent extraction process can cost effectively treat soils, sludges, and sediments contaminated with PCBs, carcinogenic PAHs, pesticides, VOCs, and other organic compounds. The B.E.S.T. process is not applicable for wastes containing only metals.
