Technology Description:

Slurry-phase bioremediation (liquid-slurry treatment) utilizes naturally occurring bacteria to convert hazardous organic chemicals into carbon dioxide and water. The natural degradation process occurs in an engineered reactor, such as a lined lagoon, tank, or other such vessel.

The initial step in the process is preparing a pumpable slurry, transporting it to the reactor, and then treating the material. When a lined lagoon is used, the treated material can be disposed of in the reactor. With tank or vessel based systems, the treated material may be transported to a land farm. When the material must be disposed of in a land disposal facility, dewatering must occur.

The treatment process occurs in a continuously stirred reactor. Oxygen is introduced along with nutrients and other biocatalyst. The process can be either continuous or batch.

Liquid slurry bioremediation is applicable to a wide variety of hydrocarbon contaminated soils and sludges generated from the petroleum refining and marketing, wood treating, and petrochemical industries. It offers a very cost effective and environmentally "friendly" treatment solution for materials that can be biodegraded. Most importantly, the technology destroys the organic contaminants. This elimination of future liability is of particular interest to
          many managers of hazardous materials.
Performance Status/
Limitations:

Performance Status:

Remediation Technologies, Inc. can provide a complete package of services after the laboratory work including engineering, regulatory support, and actual field implementation. Alternatively, others can perform these tasks after completion of the laboratory study by Remediation Technologies, Inc.

          Limitations:

Bioremediation is very selective. Not all organic compounds can be bioremediated. Halogenated solvents are a principal example of compounds that can not be efficiently treated by bioremediation.

The process takes time to implement. Most sites take 6 - 12 months to be remediated.
