Technology Description:

Prepared bed bioremediation utilizes naturally occurring bacteria to convert hazardous organic chemicals into carbon dioxide and water. The natural degradation process occurs in an engineered land treatment cell, (i.e. a prepared bed).

The initial step in the process is the preparation of a treatment cell, including leachate collection systems, liners and facilities for storm water management. Contaminated soils and sludges are excavated and transported to the prepared bed. The treatment process occurs in lifts of contaminated material. Each lift is site and contaminant specific. Treatment is accelerated by the proper addition of nutrients, water, and oxygen. Oxygen is introduced by tilling the soil.

After the first lift is successfully treated, additional lifts are added until the complete volume of contaminated soils has achieved the treatment objective.

Finally the treatment cell is capped, storm water management systems installed, and the site is typically suitable for a variety of beneficial uses.

Prepared bed bioremediation is applicable to a wide variety of hydrocarbon contaminated soils and sludges generated from the petroleum refining and marketing, wood treating and petrochemical industries. It offers a very cost effective and environmentally "friendly" treatment solution for materials that can be biodegraded. Most importantly, the technology is destructive. This elimination of future liability is of particular interest to many managers of hazardous materials.

The technology does not create harmful air emissions and has a low visual profile. Air emissions are usually not significant. Only a small amount of soil is used if the volatile concentrations are high.
Performance Status/
Limitations:

Performance Status:

Remediation Technologies, Inc. can provide a complete package of services after the lab work including engineering, regulatory support, and actual field implementation. Alternatively, others can perform these tasks after completion of the laboratory study.

          Limitations:

Bioremediation is very selective. Not all organic compounds can be bioremediated. Highly halogenated compounds, i.e. carbon tetrachloride and highly chlorinated PCBs can not currently be treated by bioremediation. Recent developments allow less halogenated compounds such as dichloroethane, trichloroethylene and others to be cost effectively treated by bioremediation.

The process requires a substantial quantity of space. Each lift has a maximum depth, which limits the quantity of material that can be treated at any one time.

The process takes time to implement. Most sites take 1-2 years to be remediated.
