Abstract:

STORET is a database containing data relating to the quality of surface water and ground water in America's waterways. Water sample observations are available for all 50 states, the U.S. territories, and portions of Canada. Included are 150 million water sample observations containing information on the chemical, physical, and biological quality of the sampled water from 800,000 sampling sites. STORET can develop reports, look at the most current data available, and present information depicting trends over time.

STORET is currently undergoing modernization to make it more compatible with today's environmental monitoring, regulatory, and computing environments. The replacement system, currently in prototype, is called STORET X. Data in the modernized STORET will be organized into 5 data-type categories:

Organizations: The group or entity responsible for the data set, either for collecting and otherwise generating the data, or sponsoring the activity for which the data set was created.

Projects: The activity during and for which the data set was created.

Sites: Also referred to as station, identification and description of the physical location at which monitoring occurs.

Samples: Water quality sampling, observation, and measurement activities that occur at these sites; comprehensive descriptors of the event during which samples were collected.

Results: The findings of the sampling event, measurements, and field activities.

          How To Access The Data

STORET is available on EPA's mainframe. There are no access fees for EPA employees or contractors. The general public can access STORET by establishing an account through the National Technical Information Service (NTIS).

A monthly usage fee is charged for all accounts regardless of use. Hourly processing charges for EPA's mainframe computers apply only when the database is accessed.

EPA also has a requester information form at the STORET World Wide Web site. STORET retrieval requests can be complicated because of the many system capabilities. For users to obtain STORET data as a non-regular, registered user, it is usually best to contact the STORET Assistance Group for help.
