Abstract:

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is one of eight health agencies of the Public Health Service which, in turn, is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). NIH is one of the world's foremost biomedical research centers, and the Federal focal point for biomedical research in the U.S. NIH supports some 30,000 research projects nationwide in diseases like cancer, Alzheimer's, diabetes, arthritis, heart ailments and AIDS. The mission of NIH is to uncover new knowledge that will lead to better health for all. NIH works toward that mission by: conducting research in its own laboratories; supporting the research of non-Federal scientists in universities, medical schools, hospitals, and research institutions throughout the country and abroad; helping in the training of research investigators; and fostering communication of biomedical information.

The NIH is comprised of 24 separate Institutes, Centers, and Divisions. Some of these include: the National Cancer Institute; the National Human Genome Research Institute; the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases; the National Institute on Aging; the National Library of Medicine; and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is the world's largest medical library. Its collection contains 5 million medical books, journals, pamphlets, rare manuscripts, films, and other items. The NLM produces Index Medicus, a comprehensive monthly listing of articles appearing in the world's leading medical journals. The Library also operates a computerized Index Medicus, known as MEDLINE, and has pioneered the introduction of large medical bibliographic databases.

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) is the NIH's institute for basic research on environment-related diseases and their effects on human health. The NIEHS Clearinghouse offers free information on environmental health effects of lead, radon, emf, specific chemicals. Grants and Contracts are awarded from within NIEHS' extramural science program, which supports a network of university-based environmental health science centers and provides research and training grants, as well as contracts for research and development. NIEHS is the headquarters of the National Toxicology Program, the Superfund Basic Research Program, and a host of other programs focused on major areas of environmental health research.
