Abstract:

The Heat Budget products are produced from Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data. Prior to the Television and Infrared Operational Satellite (TIROS)-N series of satellites, data were produced using a scanning radiometer (SR). Data are derived from corrected infrared and visible radiances mapped into 2.5 degree displays. Monthly, seasonal and decadal products are also produced.

The monthly heat budget data (1979 to present) are produced from low-resolution AVHRR daily data. Infrared and visible radiances are derived from averaging a 10 by 10 array of global area coverage (GAC) data representing a 50-km square of viewed area. Combined with these data are time, Earth location, satellite altitude and solar zenith angle. All this information is used to create the initial data base. The heat budget parameters are then derived for daytime and nighttime values. These values are then mapped into a 2.5-degree array. The data will be mapped into a polar stereographic and a Mercator projection.

Monthly mean heat budgets were produced from 1974 through 1978 using the SR from NOAA-3 and NOAA-5. Seasonal heat budgets are available from 1974 to present and are produced from the daily heat budget data. Decadal heat budget data (1974 to 1986) are derived from the seasonal heat budget data.
