Abstract:

The National Water Level Observation Network (NWLON) is the operational component of the National Water Level Observation Program. The Program provides basic tidal datums to determine U.S. coastal marine boundaries and for use on nautical charts. It also supports tsunami and storm surge warning, tidal prediction, monitoring of climate and coastal processes, and tectonic research.

NWLON consists of 189 water level measurement stations distributed along U.S. coasts, the Great Lakes and connecting channels, and U.S. territories and possessions. One hundred forty stations are considered "long-term control" and "primary" stations. These have been in operation at least 19 years, are still in continuous operation and transmit data in near-real-time.

The NOS MapFinder Preview Demonstration features water level station information for 104 of these primary stations in coastal locations. This information includes a descriptive and graphical representation of a station's location, data types collected there and, date of the earliest collected water level data.
