Abstract:

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB) is responsible for independent, external oversight of all activities in DOE's nuclear weapons complex affecting nuclear health and safety. The DNFSB has expanded public access to documents related to its public health and safety mission. The Board's new Home Page on the World Wide Web includes among other things, the full text of all its Recommendations, the 1995 Annual Report to Congress, and trip reports written by staff members following visits to Department of Energy defense nuclear facilities. Guidance and policy documents at the web site are available under the following headings:

          DNFSB Recommendations -- The Board made 36 formal sets of recommendations to the Secretary of Energy. These 36 sets included 166 specific recommendations on health and safety issues for Department of Energy defense nuclear facilities.

          DNFSB Technical Document Log -- A listing of incoming correspondence, manuals, reports and other various documents received by the Board.

          DNFSB Trip Reports -- DNFSB Members, staff and outside experts travel to the various DOE defense nuclear sites for the purpose of conducting health and safety reviews of DOE programs, policies, procedures and facility operations.

          DNFSB Technical Reports -- DNFSB Members, staff and technical experts reports on DOE defense nuclear sites, facilities, activities and specific issues.

          DNFSB Weekly Reports -- DNFSB Site Reps weekly reports to Technical Director on new and pending activities at: the Hanford Site in Washington; the Pantex Plant in Texas; the Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site in Colorado; and, the Savannah River Site in South Carolina.

          Speeches, Statements and Remarks -- DNFSB Members speeches/statements/remarks presented at public hearings, meetings and conferences.

          DNFSB Annual Reports -- Each year the Board sends to Congress a report of the activities during the previous twelve months.

          DNFSB Enabling Legislation -- Public Law 100-456, Public Law 101-510, Public Law 102-190, Public Law 102-486 and Public Law 103-160.
