AP Technologies represents the MERCROBES mercury reduction technology in North America. MERCROBES is based on proprietary microbes that reduce inorganic and organic mercury compounds to elemental mercury. The microbes have been developed and tested at GBF mbH, Brunswick, Germany, which is the National Research Institute for Biotechnology.
The microbes actively metabolize the mercury compounds. In addition to reducing charged mercury, MERCROBES can disintegrate some organic compounds such as benzenes, toluenes, etc. to CO2 and water.
Following the mercury reduction step, the elemental mercury can be recovered using standard technologies, e.g. vapor extraction. Thus, MERCROBES eliminates the need for long-term storage of media polluted
with mercury compounds.
MERCROBES can treat soils, sludges, sediments and waters contaminated with mercury and mercury compounds. The microbes grow and operate well at very high (>100 mg/l) as well as very low pollutant concentrations. Reduction efficiencies of mercury compounds range from 95% to 99%.

In fixed-bed laboratory tests, MERCROBES reduced mercury compound concentrations of 1 to 2 mg/l to concentrations in the effluent of 0.01 mg/l. In addition, the microbes are resistant to shock loads of toxics as well as high fluctuations in hydraulic loads.
