Abstract:

The Mussel Watch Project monitors a suite of contaminants in the tissue of bivalve mollusks and in sediments in coastal and estuarine waters of the United States. Mussels and oysters serve as useful indicators of temporal trends in environmental quality, because of bioaccumulation of contaminants in their tissue at levels many times higher than the surrounding water. Samples are collected from roughly 240 sites in all marine coastal U.S. states.

Mussel Watch Project data have been summarized in a number of reports and publications and are available upon request. For more information, contact the Coastal Monitoring Branch of the Office of Ocean Resources, Conservation, and Assessment (ORCA). Internet users can also obtain information on ORCA publications at their World Wide Web site. Information on the Mussel Watch Project can also be obtained from EPA's web site at http://www.epa.gov/cesssi96/ces/guide/prog(20).htm.
