The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) was established by the U.S. Congress in 1933 primarily to provide flood control, navigation, and electric power in the Tennessee Valley region. The TVA is: a federal corporation; the nation's largest electricity producer; a regional economic development agency; and a steward of the Tennessee River basin. The TVA is working to become a world leader in providing energy and related services-independently and in alliances with others-for society's global needs. Currently, the TVA provides electricity to 7.3 million consumers in parts of seven Southeastern states.
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) conducts a unified program of resource development for the advancement of economic growth in the Tennessee Valley region. The Authority's program includes flood control, navigation development, electric power production, fertilizer development, recreation improvement, and forestry and wildlife development. Some of the types of projects the TVA is involved with include:
Finding cost-effective ways to reduce pollution through such techniques as destroying toxic wastes in soil and designing constructed wetlands to serve as wastewater treatment plants, and
Training individuals to assess waste problems and recommend ways for companies to reduce wastes, increase efficiency, and convert wastes to usable products.
