Abstract:

The Office of the Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Environmental Security or DUSD(ES) is part of the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD). The mission of DOD's Environmental Security Program fulfills four overriding and interconnected goals.
        • The first is to comply with the law.
        • The second goal is to support the military readiness of the U.S. armed forces by ensuring continued access to the air, land and water needed for training and testing.
        • The third goal is to improve the quality of life for military personnel and their families by protecting them from environmental, safety, and health hazards and maintaining quality military facilities.
        • The fourth goal is to contribute to weapon systems that have improved performance, lower cost, and better environmental characteristics.

          The DUSD(ES) consists of a number of programs including:

          Safety, Occupational Health, Fire Prevention, and Emergency Services
          Environmental Clean-Up
          Program Integration
          Environmental Security Technology Requirements Group (ESTRG)
          Explosives Safety Board
          Environmental Quality
          Armed Forces Pest Management Board

          The Environmental Quality program is administered by the Office of the Assistant Deputy Under Secretary of Defense (Environmental Security)/Environmental Quality -- ADUSD(ES)/EQ. This office consists of:

          Compliance
          Conservation
          Pollution Prevention
          Education & Training
          Environmental Planning

          As a part of the Environmental Quality Program, DOD will invest in pollution prevention to reduce the cost of cleanup and compliance, will promote technology innovations to obtain better and cheaper environmental performance, and will support community revitalization with fast-track cleanup of closed or realigned facilities.
