Technology Description:

Bioremediation Service, Inc. recycles by applying natural degradation processes in a controlled manner. Naturally-occurring microbes exist even in the most heavily contaminated soils, where they gradually metabolize compounds such as mineral oils, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, and polychlorinated biphenyls. Bioremediation Service, Inc. specializes in the understanding of the metabolic pathways and the optimization of the microbial environment for rapid, large-scale biodegradation. Our company has, in the course of its long experience, developed advanced biological soil reclamation techniques which enable us to control the natural degradation processes within fine limits and optimize them for our purposes. For example, Bioremediation Service, Inc. can reduce the degradation period for mineral oils to a matter of months. These processes can be implemented on site (soil treatment in special biodegradation beds) or off site in specialized soil treatment centers. In every case, the product is the same -- healthy, biologically active natural soil. The advantages compared with traditional methods are obvious -- no high costs for already scarce landfills and no dangerous residues. Contaminated soil no longer represents a disagreeable problem -- instead it is a valuable reusable natural asset.

          Site Monitoring:

Each site is extensively sampled before we undertake process design work. If indicated, monitoring and recovery wells are bored to assess and control contaminant migration. Samples are analyzed in mobile, on site laboratories, or at our central facilities.

          Site Engineering:

Project plans are developed by a team of microbiologists, geologists, and chemical engineers. Drawing on 17 years' experience, they can reliably distinguish feasible approaches from those that are less promising. The project team determines site layout, equipment selection, and any special process features required for large-scale reclamation.
Performance Status/
Limitations:

Performance Status:

This technology is internationally established with both on site and central processing facilities. The central facilities are equipped with the most advanced industrial technologies and equipment, thus providing an excellent test bed for future mobile treatment systems.

With commercial treatment of several contaminant types well in hand, research is continuing on the biological reclamation of soils contaminated with increasingly toxic compounds. Independently and in close cooperation with site owners and universities, we are constantly pushing back the limits of biological reclamation technologies.

          Limitations:

Each site and material must be evaluated prior to implementing a biological solution. The soil is examined in our own chemical laboratory to assess the type and extent of the contamination. The microbiological laboratory analyzes the presence and activity of the local microbial strains in the contaminated soil. Biologists then specify the type and quantity of natural additives required to produce maximum degradation rates.
