Abstract:

The Environmental Policy Research Unit was founded at the Free University of Berlin in 1986. Research at the FFU covers five main areas of environmental policy:
          1. evaluation of environmental policy of all industrialised countries; i.e. analysis of environmental reports, studies on national environmental policies, policy instruments and conditions of environmental policy success, analysis of the ecological implications of structural change and structural policy via international comparisons.
          2. empirical studies on "sustainable development" in industrialised countries.
          3. comparative analysis of energy related environmental policy (concentrating on clean air policy, climate protection policy, ecological modernisation of the energy sector)
          4. scientific and political conditions of environmental reporting and research on environmental indicators.
          5. interdisciplinary further education on ecological topics: Advanced studies in the environmental field in cooperation with the Humboldt University of Berlin; Courses and seminars at the Technical University of Gdansk and the University of Latvia in cooperation with the Roskilde Universitetscenter as part of the TEMPUS programme of the European Community; Participation in the international Ph.D. network "Sustainable Environmental Policy and Management (SEPMA)

            The FFU works in the field of basic research as well as applied research. It offers policy consultancy to federal and state authorities, local administrations, political parties, associations, citizens' action committees, the media and private and public companies.

            The research projects are mainly financed by non-university funds: e.g. Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, Volkswagen-Stiftung, Umweltbundesamt, Statistisches Bundesamt (at national level), and Anglo-German Foundation, European Community, UN-University (at international level). The FFU also conducts joint projects with the Science Center Berlin for Social Research.

            A data base includes time series on the development of environment, industry, energy and transportation in industrialized countries.

            FFU Book publications appear at the edition sigma in Berlin. The findings of the research projects are published at the "FFU-Report" series.
