Abstract:

AIChE, in partnership with the Dow Chemical Company, introduced CHEMPAT, a software program that can help process engineers better determine the compatibility of chemicals and the possible hazards of inadvertent mixing, in 1996.

Made available through a special agreement between AIChE and Dow, which developed the program and has used it at its own facilities since 1988, CHEMPAT is designed to be customized to the specific needs of each chemical plant. It provides a DOS-based, Windows compatible "shell" for evaluating hazards. An operator or engineer enters data based on the chemicals used within the operation. CHEMPAT then produces a compatibility, or inter-reactivity, chart and maintains a database of the initial information, making it easy to update compatibility charts as conditions or chemicals change within the process.
