Abstract:

The Soil Conservation Service (SCS) conducts a national resource inventory of non-Federal lands on a 5-year cycle. Information is collected on soil characteristics, land cover and use, erosion, land treatment, conservation treatment needs, vegetative condition, and potential for cropland conversion. The National Resource Inventory (NRI) is the Federal Government's principal source of information on the status, condition, and trends of the Nation's soil, water and related natural resources.

The SCS conducted NRIs in 1982 and 1987. Sample points will be digitized for the first time beginning with the 1992 NRI. The 1982 and 1987 data are georeferenced by State, county, Major Land Resource Area and 8-digit hydrologic unit code. The inventory is based on a scientifically designed random sample of the United States. Data collection sites consist of approximately 300,000 Primary Sampling Units (PSUs) and 800,000 sample points. PSUs range in size from 40 acres to 640 acres, but are typically 160 acres. Each PSU usually has three sample points randomly placed within them. Over 100 pieces of information are collected for each sample point. The base map used for compiling and digitizing the PSU sample points is either a 1:24,000- or 1:100,000-scale USGS quadrangle map. PSUs digitized from the quadrangle maps are merged and archived as county-wide data sets. All county data sets are merged and archived as a Statewide data set.
