Abstract:

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) works to improve and maintain farm income and to develop and expand markets abroad for agricultural products. The Department works to enhance the environment and to maintain production capacity by helping landowners protect the soil, water, forests, and other natural resources. Through inspection and grading services, the USDA safeguards and ensures standards of quality in the daily food supply. The USDA is divided into seven primary mission areas, as shown below:

          FARM AND FOREIGN AGRICULTURAL SERVICES - responsible for administering agricultural price and income support programs, production adjustment programs, and the Conservation Reserve Program. Includes the Farm Service Agency, Foreign Agricultural Service, and Risk Management.

          FOOD, NUTRITION, AND CONSUMER SERVICES - ensures access to nutritious, healthful diets for all Americans through food assistance and nutrition education for consumers. Includes the Food and Consumer Service.

          FOOD SAFETY - conducts specific activities to ensure the safety of meat and poultry products consumed in this country. Includes the Food Safety and Inspection Service.

          MARKETING AND REGULATORY PROGRAMS - consists of programs designed to enhance marketing and distribution of agricultural products and assure a competitive, fair, and cost-effective marketplace. Includes the Agricultural Marketing Service, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, and the Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration.

          NATURAL RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENT - plays a critical role in the sound stewardship of the Nation's land and natural resources by applying sustainable ecosystem principles in the management of soil, water, forests, and wildlife. Includes the U.S. Forest Service and the Natural Resources Conservation Service.

          RESEARCH, EDUCATION, AND ECONOMICS - strives to develop cutting edge technologies that improve food and fiber production and enhance the safety of the national food supply. Includes the Agricultural Research Service, National Agricultural Library, Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service, Economic Research Service, and the National Agricultural Statistics Service.

          RURAL DEVELOPMENT - has the unique responsibility of coordinating Federal assistance to rural areas to help rural Americans improve the quality of their lives. Includes the Rural Utilities Service, Rural Housing Service, and Rural Business - Cooperative Service.
