Abstract:

This two-day intermediate to advanced level course exposes participants to the quantitative, statistical, modeling, and problem-solving skills used in human health risk assessments. The course curriculum will consist of an overview of risk assessment, hands-on calculations to estimate dose, and explanation of the development of risk-based cleanup levels. In addition, you will learn about the application of several publicly available analytical contaminant fate and transport models that are most commonly used in performing exposure assessments.

The models will be discussed by the instructors; however, hands-on computer modeling by participants is not a part of this course. The instructors have extensive knowledge in the development and site-specific application of these models and will be able to answer your specific questions/concerns about the models. You will learn to apply the results of contaminant transport models and exposure assessment techniques to assess contaminant pathways and concentrations for determining receptor point exposure concentrations. Exposure to contaminants through dermal contact, inhalation, and ingestion (water, soil, produce) will be discussed.

You will be led through problem-solving example exercises using calculators to illustrate how risk-based soil cleanup levels are derived and used for site closure assessments at hazardous and non-hazardous waste sites. The course provides guidance on a few statistical techniques commonly used to analyze field data prior to conducting the risk assessment. Ecological risk assessment will not be discussed in this course.
