The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) monitors the manufacture, import, transport, storage and sale of about $1 trillion worth of products each year. FDA is a public health agency, charged with protecting American consumers by enforcing the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act and several related public health laws. FDA has some 1,100 investigators and inspectors located in district and local offices in 157 cities across the country. These investigators and inspectors visit more than 15,000 facilities a year, seeing that products are made right and labeled truthfully, and collecting about 80,000 domestic and imported product samples for examination by FDA scientists or for label checks.
FDA also operates the National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR) at Jefferson, Arkansas, which investigates the biological effects of widely used chemicals. The mission of the NCTR is to conduct peer-reviewed scientific research that supports and anticipates the FDA's current and future regulatory needs. The Center conducts research programs to study the biological mechanisms of action underlying the toxicity of products regulated by the FDA. This research is aimed at determining the health effects resulting from long-term, low-level exposure to chemical toxicants, and at developing methods to improve assessment of human exposure, susceptibility and risk.
