Abstract:

Water quantity and quality data for geographic regions of the United States are available in print form and as machine-readable files. Water-data stations throughout the United States are used to obtain records on stream discharge (flow), stage (height), reservoir and lake stage and storage, groundwater levels, well and spring discharge, and the quality of surface and groundwater. All data collected are stores in the USGS Water Data Storage and Retrieval system (WATSTORE) data base, and also are published annually for each State in U.S. Geological Survey Water-Data Reports.

The National Water Information System (NWIS) is the term for the hardware / software delivery system of which the WATSTORE data base is a part. Certain stations have been organized into four specialized networks with the following functions:

The largest network, which consists of more than 400 sampling sites, is the National Stream quality Accounting Network (NASQAN). Samples from NASQAN data-collection sites, which are located at or near the downstream end of hydrologic accounting units or similar points, are used to measure a comprehensive list of physical/chemical characteristics to show the cumulative effects of upstream activity. These samples are taken at a minimum interval of once per quarter. Operated within NASQAN is the Radio-chemical Surveillance Network consisting of 46 sites at which data for several isotopes are obtained. Additional radiochemical data are collected from the Tritium Network, Consisting of 13 streamflow and 9 atmospheric precipitation sites in the Nation. The Hydrologic Bench-Mark Network consists of 58 sites used to monitor streamflow and water quality of small river basins that are relatively unaffected by man's activities.
