Abstract:

CIESIN is a non-profit, non-governmental online organization dedicated to making earth science information available to researchers, policy makers, and the general public. CIESIN's online World Wide Web site provides a variety of information related to earth science, including guides to various types of earth science information. Users can search through CIESIN's World Wide Web space by keyword. Searching can also be restricted to certain areas, such as Information Cooperative or Thematic Guides.

Thematic Guides provide online overviews of key issues and topics that pertain to human interactions in global environmental change, providing access to the full text of hundreds of journal articles, government reports, conference papers, government reports, etc., in the following subject areas: Agriculture, Human Dimensions Research Programs, Human Health, Land Use, Ozone Depletion, Political Institutions, Integrated Assessment Modeling of Climate Change, and Remote Sensing.

Dataset Guides offer information about selected datasets which are accessible through CIESIN's gateway. Each guide provides an overview of the dataset and details on its source and history. Access to a number of databases is provided through CIESIN. Some examples include:
        • Environmental Treaties and Resource Indicators Service - a searchable online relational database containing international environmental treaty information.
        • Global Population Database - online database which contains population data for over 100 nations, accessible via ftp.
        • Stratospheric Ozone and Human Health Project - A suite of information products in the areas of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, ozone (and ozone depletion), and human health impacts of UV exposure.
