InVitro International's Corrositex is an in vitro testing system that mimics the effect of corrosives on living skin and classifies the level of corrosivity in chemicals, formulations, and waste. The product is an EPA-accepted (SW-846 Method 1120) test that reliably defines that United Nations Packing Group classification of Class 8 corrosives. The proprietary test system, which replaces animal tests of corrosivity, is based the principle that corrosive substances will penetrate a synthetic biobarrier within a specified time period. Once the corrosive substance has breached the biobarrier, its presence is detected as a visible color change taking place in a chemical detection system. This Department of Transportation approved (DOT E 10904) test has been shown to accurately characterize the corrosivity of organic and inorganic acids, organic and inorganic bases, acyl halides, alkylamines and polyalkylamines, chlorosilances, and metal halides and oxyhalides. The test is completely portable and designed for use with single samples of either solid or liquid materials. Corrositex kits may be purchased and the test performed on-site, or samples may be sent to laboratories for testing. |
