MOBILE5a, the current release of the highway vehicle emission factor model, was issued in March 1993. It has been used by state agencies and other parties to develop emission inventories and emission reduction plans required as part of the State Implementation Plan (SIP) process for nonattainment areas. The 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments require EPA to evaluate and update the MOBILE model periodically and the Office of Mobile Sources (OMS) has begun the process of updating the model. The release date for the new version of the MOBILE model (MOBILE6) is tentatively set for Summer 1998.
