Technology Description:

The MM-1 is an extremely rugged, mobile mass spectrometer designed for the rapid identification and semi-quantitative determination of organic pollutants or poisonous substances etc. present in trace amounts in air, water, soil and on surfaces. It can operate under extreme conditions of humidity and temperatures. It is designed for use with a 24 V power supply from batteries. It is thus truly mobile and can be used even during transportation to a contamination site.

The system consists of specialized samplers for the introduction of organic compounds from various matrixes, a quadrupole mass spectrometer and a data system. For complicated mixtures, separation by gas chromatography (GC) techniques prior to introduction into the mass spectrometer is essential. The resulting mass spectra are identified by comparison with the spectra stored in the external data system and subsequent quantification is possible.

Using a direct inlet sampler substances present in the air concentrations down to the 20 ppm level can be identified. With the same sampler amounts down to 10 mg per square meter or ca. 100 ppm in soil can be identified. A GC sampler combined wit a Tenax trap allows the separation and identification of organic compounds in the air or water down to the 10 ppb level. Normally no wet sample preparation is required although a quick extraction can be useful with soil samples prior to using one of the samplers. This improves the sensitivity by a factor of ca. 10 and allows a standard to be added for semi-quantitative work.

After the compounds present have been determined, an automatic selected ion monitoring routine can be used. This allows the operator to look for the presence of particular compounds and determine their concentration. Here the minimum detection limit can be ca. 10 times lower than with full spectra aquisition.
Performance Status/
Limitations:

Performance Status:

The MM-1 technology is fully matured and the lessons learned from it been used in the development of the second generation of mobile GC/MS systems. One of these systems is expected to be tested by the Consortium for Site Characterization Technologies in 1995.

          Limitations:

The instrument is not so sensitive nor is the resolution of the GC as good as that achieved by laboratory instruments. The system is not capable of dealing with very involatile compounds, e.g. benzopyrenes. This is more of a handicap in dealing with a detailed site investigation where low minimum detection limits are required than for a chemical "accident". The concentrations which define the occurrence of a chemical accident are higher and the main interest is in the volatile compounds in the air.

Elaborate sample preparation and exact quantitative work is not so easy in a vehicle on site.

When used for air samples, the direct inlet system requires that the source to be investigated is within 3 meters of the system. This can lead to difficulties on rough terrain. A four wheel drive vehicle can be used for such cases to transport the MM-1 to the analysis site.
