Abstract:

The NPDP, formally started in 1994, is a cooperative effort of dam engineers and safety professionals in the U.S. and Canada to learn from the in-service performance of dams, supporting improvements in dam design, operation and public policy. The mission of the NPDP is to be the leading technical resource for information on the performance of dams, supporting dam safety, engineering and public policy. The objectives of the NPDP are to retrieve, archive, and disseminate information on the performance of dams.

Resources currently being developed for access on the World Wide Web include:
  • NPDP Directory of Dams - A directory of existing or retired dams in the U.S. and Canada. The directory is based on the U.S. National Inventory of Dams (U.S. NID), Canadian provincial resources, and NPDP records of historic incidents at dams that predate the U.S. NID.
  • Incident Database - This is the master database of dam incidents on file at the NPDP archive. It will provide basic information about an incident (e.g., date, type of incident).
  • Reference Database - This database will contain all documents on file in the NPDP archive. The user will be able to identify documents by keywords, dam name or NPDP (or NATDAM) ID number, or by document type (i.e. videotape).

The NPDP is headquartered at Stanford University at the Center on the Performance of Dams.
