Abstract:

Funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Small Flows Clearinghouse (NSFC) provides information about innovative, low-cost wastewater treatments to small communities (those with populations less than 10,000). The NSFC houses a number of extensive and comprehensive computer databases that contain the latest information about "small flows" technology (those systems treating less than one million gallons of wastewater a day). Searchable by key word, these databases enable technical assistants to access a variety of wastewater information and provide printouts of the searches.

The following databases are available through the NSFC:

Bibliographic Database: This database contains abstracts of more than 4,000 articles on such topics as wastewater regulations, water conservation, treatment technology, and operation and maintenance. Technical assistants are available to conduct literature searches that can provide journal and article titles, volume numbers, author names, and an abstract, which may help users decide if the article is really what is needed. Copies of these articles are available from the NSFC.

Manufacturers and Consultants Database: This database provides callers with a list of industry contacts for wastewater products and professional consulting. The database serves as a contact reference source for engineers, regulators, private citizens, and small town and city officials. It also serves as a referral database for helping callers locate specific wastewater products and trade items.

Contacts and Referrals Database: This database contains an up-to-date list of agencies, organizations, and programs involved in small community wastewater issues at national, state, and local levels. Organizations that appear on the list are divided into the following assistance categories: facilities, finance, research, regulations, technical assistance and outreach, and training.

Facilities Database: This database provides the names and addresses of small-scale facilities using conventional and alternative wastewater treatment technologies throughout the U.S. It allows callers to locate other systems which they may assess to determine the technology or technologies that best suit their particular needs.

State Regulations Database: This database contains copies of all current onsite wastewater regulations at the state level. (Forty-seven states have state-level onsite regulations.)

          How To Access The Data

Individuals involved with small community wastewater systems can request a database search by contacting the NSFC at (800) 624-8301and asking a technical assistant to conduct a specialized search. There is no charge for requesting a database search from the NSFC.
