Technology Description:

TESS, an acronym for "Transform method for Extinction-Scattering with Spatial resolution" is a patented technique for continuous in-line particulate emission monitoring based on laser light scattering. Developed from an EPA funded study, TESS determines the total particle mass concentration in the flow of stack exhaust gases, based on the ratio of scattered to transmitted light. The basic measurement principle is the following: a solid state diode illuminates particles as they flow through a 1"x3.5" slot. The particles scatter light into a proprietary optical system with solid state detectors. Laser alignment is fixed. Zero and span are provided. Measurements with TESS are independent of the particle composition, velocity and size distribution (over the size measurement limits for a particular instrument configuration).

TESS provides menu-driven, color graphics software for instrument monitoring, data acquisition, processing, real time display and process system feedback control. Time integration/averaging periods can be selected by the user. The system requires a portable 486 computer. The software supports an interface with distributed control systems and hard copy output to a laser printer. Complete time records can be accessed for review and analysis. Post-test statistical process charting is also available. An enclosure can be provided around the signal processing unit to meet potential explosion/water proof requirements.

The TESS technology is currently available in a portable probe configuration (presented in this database). A similar TESS instrument for use in a bypass configuration is under development (not presented in this database). A single-particle counter tool called PCSV (also not presented in this database) is also commercially available from Insitec for monitoring of particle emissions at extremely low concentrations.
Performance Status/
Limitations:

Performance Status:

The TESS instrument has been successfully used for monitoring of particulate emissions in a range of source types: coal-fired combustion, incineration, pulp and paper, refineries, metal smelting, process dust, etc.

          Limitations:

TESS delivers real time information on total volumetric concentration. Mass concentrations can be computed assuming an average particle density. Although this assumption is valid for most industrial processes, it cannot be supported for a limited number of processes which generate particles whose nature and density vary widely over time.

With a water-cooled jacket, the TESS probe can operate in temperatures up to 1000 degrees F.
