Abstract: | |
Natural attenuation, also known as intrinsic remediation, intrinsic bioremediation, and passive bioremediation, has become increasingly accepted as a remedial alternative for organic compounds dissolved in groundwater. The U.S. EPA Office of Research and Development (ORD) and Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response (OSWER) define natural attenuation as: "The biodegradation, dispersion, dilution, sorption, volatilization, and/or chemical and biochemical stabilization of contaminants to reduce contaminant toxicity, mobility, or volume effectively to levels that are protective of human health and the ecosystem."
Although many state and federal agencies recognize natural attenuation as a viable remediation approach, this alternative must be supported by sufficient evidence of its effectiveness. Such evidence includes adequate site characterization, realistic estimates of attenuation rates, modeling studies that identify the potential exposure and risk at these sites, and an adequate monitoring program to show that natural attenuation is occurring as expected.
This course stresses the underlying concepts and field implementation procedures for evaluating and applying remediation by natural attenuation. It provides in-depth discussions of the mechanisms of natural attenuation, data collection and analysis, quantification of contaminant transport and fate processes, and regulatory considerations involved in implementing natural attenuation as a remedy for groundwater contamination. This course also gives participants hands-on experience with state-of-the-art numerical and analytical models for simulating natural attenuation.
