Technology Description:

The heart of an Ion Mobility Spectroscopy (IMS) analyzer is the cell. The diluted sample from the sampling system is forced over a semi-permeable membrane on the outside of the cell. The membrane allows materials of interest to enter the detection cell, when attenuating many possible interferents. Purified dry instrument air (supplied external to the analyzer) sweeps the membrane on the inside of the cell and delivers the sample to the reaction region. There the sample is ionized by a weak plasma formed by a small nickel 63 radioactive source. Often, a dopant material is added to this flow to enhance the ionization process and increase specificity. The ionized sample molecules drift through the cell under the influence of an electric field. An electric shutter grid allow periodic introduction of the ions into a drift tube where they separate based on charge, mass and shape. Smaller ions move faster than larger ions through the drift tube and arrive at the detector. The current created at the detector is amplified, measured as a function of time, and a spectrum is generated. A microprocessor evaluates the spectrum for the target compound and determines the concentration based on the peak height. The concentration is displayed on the front of the analyzer, and a 4-20 mA signal is generated for remote indication.

Specificity is achieved through several mechanisms. The membrane is selected based on its ability to permeate the target compound at a greater rate than possible interferents. Most compounds form ions of only one polarity. By biasing the polarity of the electric field, either positive or negative ions are detected. Ions of the opposite polarity are not detected and thus do not interfere. Use of dopant materials increase specificity by alternating the ionization process so compounds that may produce a possible interference simply are not ionized. Finally, each compound has a specific drift time which allows the microprocessor to identify the compound in the IMS spectrum.
Performance Status/
Limitations:

Performance Status:

The AirSentry-IMS is a worldwide, field proven technology that does not rely on liquids or tapes and has no moving parts.

          Limitations:

Slower response than IR, application dependent.
