The mission of the Environmental Laboratory is to provide environmental analysis research, development, consultation, technology transfer direct response and training support to the Corps of Engineers, the Army, other DoD elements, and other Government agencies in the general fields of:
(a) environmental quality; (b) resource inventory, analysis, evaluation, and management; (c) water quality; (d) pollution abatement; (e) pollution prevention; (f) hazardous, toxic and radioactive waste characterization; inventory, treatment, and/or disposal; (g) contaminant mobility; (h) wetlands; (i) fate and effects environmental risk assessment; (j) aquatic plant control and other non-indigenous species control such as zebra mussels; (k) dredging and dredged material management; (l) environmental engineering; (m) environmental modeling and simulations; (n) environmental restoration; (o) assessment, treatment and management of contaminated sediments, (p) environmental chemistry, (q) environmental sensors development, (r) outdoor recreation, and (s) cultural resources. More specifically, the lab:
Conducts research for the enhancement of technology for the identification, assessment, treatment, and management of such areas as toxic and hazardous wastes, explosives, unexploded ordnance, contaminated sediments, and other related physical, chemical, and/or biological variables.
Develops and applies water quality and environmental simulation models.
Conducts biodegradation/bioremediation studies.
Conducts contaminant mobilization/uptake/fate and effects and environmental risk studies.
Conducts bench and pilot hazardous and toxic waste and contaminated sediment treatability studies.
Conducts wetlands functions, delineation, evaluation, construction, restoration, management, and stewardship studies.
Develops and applies contaminant fate and effects models for surface and groundwater.
Conducts environmental assessment investigations.
Conducts ecosystem management and restoration studies.
