NACCHO was formed in July 1994 when the National Association of County Health Officials and the U.S. Conference of Local Health Officers combined to form a unified organization representing local public health. The two predecessor organizations were formed separately in the 1960s.
NACCHO is a nonprofit membership organization serving all of the nearly 3,000 local health departments nationwide in cities, counties, townships, and districts. NACCHO provides education, information, research, and technical assistance to local health departments and facilitates partnerships among local, state, and federal agencies in order to promote and strengthen public health.
NACCHO is dedicated to improving the health of people and communities by assuring an effective local public health system. As the voice of local public health officials at the national level, NACCHO is able to promote the local perspective on national health programs and policies. This is accomplished by developing technical competence, managerial capacity, and leadership potential of local public health officials and the local public health workforce; building partnerships and collaborative relationships with state and federal health agencies and other national organizations with an interest in health; and maintaining communications with local health officials to serve as an exchange point for information and ideas. |
