Overview of State Regulations

          South Dakota has adopted Federal EPA regulations for asbestos. The state is NESHAP-delegated by the EPA Region 8.

          State/Federal Agencies Involved with the State Asbestos Program

          The following agencies/entities have asbestos-related regulatory and enforcement responsibilities in South Dakota:

          A. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Waste Management Program Asbestos Program (general phone (605) 773-3153) is involved in the following state/federal asbestos enforcement/requirements:
        • training courses - The state training course program for asbestos personnel is fully approved by the EPA Region 8.

        • pre-abatement notifications/approvals
        • NESHAP/demolition/renovation/wet/tag/bag/bury
        • site audit/inspections
        • transportation
        • disposal

          Laboratory Requirements

          The state has no requirements for laboratory accreditations to perform asbestos analyses.

          Federal regulations require laboratories and analysts performing asbestos analyses to be properly accredited. Contact the two following organizations for accreditation information:
