STN (the Scientific and Technical Information Network) is an online scientific and technical information network dedicated to meeting the information needs of both information professionals and scientists. Operated by CAS, a division of the American Chemical Society, STN provides access to approximately 200 databases covering scientific and technical topics, including Chemistry, Medicine, Biotechnology, Pharmacology, Health and Safety, Engineering, Energy, Geology, Government Regulations, Materials Science, Mathematics, and Physics. Some of STN's special features include advanced chemical structure searching, easy cross-searching of complementary databases, chemical reaction information, and computational services.
STN offers two access options:
- STN International - STN International is a fee based online search service that provides accurate, up-to-date, specific information from all of STN's scientific, technical, business, and patent databases. STN International can be accessed via dial-up modem or through the Internet via Telnet.
- STN Easy - STN Easy is a fee based World Wide Web service that provides access to selected databases, including the CAS Registry database. The CAS Registry provides access to over 15 million chemical substance records indexed by CAS, and includes molecular formulas, CAS Registry Numbers, synonyms, structure diagrams, and substance definitions.
Database access charges for STN International vary from <$20 per hour to >$200 per hour, depending on which database is accessed. Connect charges range from $5 to $12 per hour. Access charges for STN Easy include a $2 search fee plus a display fee ranging from $1.50 to $25.00 per search.
