Technology Description:

General Analysis Corporation (GAC) offers a portable instrument for measuring Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons and Total Aromatic Hydrocarbons in soil and water samples which is designed for use in the field as well as in a laboratory. The system is an infrared spectrometer, a filter type instrument which uses narrow bandpass filters that isolate the specific wavelengths where the components being measured actually absorb infrared energy.

In the TPH instruments, infrared energy is simultaneously passed through a transmission cell containing the sample and focused onto a reference wavelength filter. Either one or two analytical wavelengths, depending on the instrument are used for analysis. Infrared absorbance is directly proportional to concentration according to Beer's Law. The signal is then converted electronically into a direct readout in mg/L or some other characterized units.

The TPH Analyzers are interference-filter based, multiple wavelength infrared filtometers. They use a conventional infrared source, very large aperture optics and a unique beam splitter arrangement that together allow multiple wavelength measurements to be made, simultaneously, providing greater sensitivity and accuracy.
Performance Status/
Limitations:

The TPH Analyzers from GAC are widely used as the infrared measurement device in accordance with EPA methods 418.1 and 413.2 for measuring oil in water or soil.

The TPH is an infrared analyzer with no known technical limitations in and of itself. Limitations arise in the handling of the water or soil sample.

Potential water interference is eliminated by the addition of silica gel. The solubility of the higher weight compounds in the extraction solvent, Freon 113, may reduce sensitivity.
