Fenton's reagent is used in the reaction between hydrogen peroxide and ferrous iron (II) to generate a hydroxyl radical. This radical is second only to fluorine in oxidation potential. This oxidation potential creates nonspecific oxidations with organic compounds. Independent researchers have applied Fenton's reagent to treatment of organic contaminants. This nonspecific oxidation system provides a rapid system for dechlorination and ring cleavage of complex hydrocarbon structures. These chemical reactions subsequently facilitate rapid biodegradation by established microflora. Pretreatment involves the incorporation of hydrogen peroxide and thorough mixing. Subsequent mixing includes the addition of substrates, nutrients, pH amendments, and inoculum. Full scale treatment is continuous and ex situ.
This technology offers permanent destruction of chlorinated and other complex hydrocarbons at a cost substantially less than incineration. This combined treatment can shorten the time required for traditional bioremediation process. Scale up is not a problem. Field-scale practices were scaled down in the laboratory to prevent any difficulties in industrial applications.
