Technology Description:

The Mutatox test is a rapid, sensitive test for the detection of mutagenicity and genotoxicity. It is based on bacterial bioluminescence in a special strain of Vibrio fischerii. Chemicals which cause genetic damage cause the induction of light output in this otherwise dark strain of bacteria. By measuring the light output of a culture of the organisms, mutagenic and genotoxic events are detected. The Mutatox test compares very well with the Ames mutagenicity tests, but is much less difficult and labor intensive.

Genotoxicity and mutagenicity are related to the carcinogenic potential of a sample. Often, compounds which are acutely toxic at high levels are genotoxic at lower concentrations. Mutatox represents the most functional available approach to testing this important parameter. It is inexpensive when compared with Ames testing or testing in rats and mice, and can test a variety of sample configurations. Monitoring targets include any target normally relevant in ecotoxicity.
Performance Status/
Limitations:

Mutatox suffers the classic limitation of all bioassays. It can indicate overall mutagenicity or genotoxicity, but cannot tell the operator what specific chemical caused a response. Chemical testing must be performed to determine the contaminants which are present. Additionally, the Mutatox cannot differentiate between types of mutations (point, deletion, etc.) caused by a mutagen.
