Technology Description:

DUAL PHASE EXTRACTION

FE ACTIVE (TM), an acronym for Aggressive Cleaning and Treatment by Injection and Vapor Extraction is an in situ system used to remove volatile organic contaminants (VOC) that are resistant to removal by traditional groundwater pumping systems. FE ACTIVE (TM) is a full-scale mobile system that has been developed to clean-up VOCs within low to moderate yield bedrock aquifers through intensive short term remediation.

The process can be described in four steps. In the first step, pneumatic fracturing is performed using an air compressor. Expandable packers are used to seal the borehole or well so sufficient pressures can be applied to the treatment zone. Pressures in the bedrock enhance fractures allowing increased well yield and volatile contaminate cleanup through volatilization of VOCs in the saturated and unsaturated zones.

The second step of the process involves lowering the water table by dewatering the saturated zone using continuous pumping. The dewatered zone provides an increased surface area so that air injection and soil vapor extraction can effectively volatilize residual contaminates. The next step strips VOCs from the saturated zone by injecting air below the water table and generating bubbles which strip the VOCs from the groundwater. In addition, this promotes air flow within the dewatered zone, enhancing the extraction of residual VOCs.

The final step in the system, vapor extraction, relies on the strong tendency of volatile contaminates to volatilize. This typically takes place in several weeks to several months, depending primarily on the volume and concentration of liquid solvent and on the rate at which air can be drawn through the treatment zone.

Once the vapors are recovered by the system, they can be treated with portable catalytic oxidation, granular activated carbon or biofilters, prior to discharge. The groundwater can be treated with air stripping carbon adsorption, or bioreactors.

The system is mobile and can be adapted for a variety of site- specific conditions. Set-up and operation of the system typically takes one to two weeks. Results of aquifer cleanup can be evaluated daily using First Environment's on-site laboratory to determine the effectiveness of cleanup. Adjustments are made on site to optimize air and groundwater recovery during the test to obtain maximum VOCs recovery.
Performance Status/
Limitations:

Performance Status:

The FE ACTIVE (TM) system can clean-up VOCs in low-yield formations from both the saturated and unsaturated zone concurrently with savings of 50% or more when compared to long-term pump and treat methods. The system has the advantage of increasing water and air withdrawal from fractures within both the saturated and unsaturated zone, which dramatically increases the rate at which VOCs are removed.

          Limitations:

The FE ACTIVE (TM) system is not applicable to non-volatiles, inorganic or radioactive wastes in groundwater or soil. The efficiency of VOC extraction is dependent on the contaminants vapor pressure and Henry's Law constants.
