Technology Description:

Solid phase bioremediation involves the cleaning of soil contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons and some low molecular weight PAHs.

          The contaminated soil is processed through a specially designed machine which shreds the soil, adds a compost material, nutrients, and water. The finished product is a fluffy, well blended mixture of soil and organic substrate that has achieved the proper moisture level (70 percent field capacity) and inorganic nutrient level for optimum bioremediation.

          The soil can then be placed in covered structures or covered with a liner. Aeration pipes can be placed throughout the pile to prevent stagnation.

          Typical daily throughput is 240-300 tons per day.

          Modifications of this technology are effective for inorganic contaminants, (for example, heavy metals).

          Based on site specific cases, may need control of volatile emissions during excavation and treatment.
