The office is a nonregulatory state agency that assists Massachusetts industry in making viable changes in their production practices aimed at reducing or eliminating the use of toxic substances and the generation of toxic byproducts. OTA's confidential, nonregulatory services are available at no charge to Massachusetts businesses and institutions that use toxic chemicals.
The Office promotes the reduced use of toxic chemicals through methods that include material substitution, process modification, product reformulation, process modernization, operations and maintenance improvements, and in-process recycling. OTA also provides free training materials and information to help plant managers and executives develop TUR programs at their facilities.
OTA offers the following services:
- On-site TUR opportunity assessments.
- Response to telephone and written requests for information concerning TUR and compliance with environmental laws.
- Financial analysis to identify costs and benefits of TUR projects.
- Conferences, workshops, seminars, and trade shows to disseminate information about TUR practices, technologies, and relevant regulatory requirements.
- Information about existing and emerging manufacturing practices which reduce toxic substance use, hazardous waste generation, toxic air emissions, and wastewater discharges.
- The OTA bulletin board has announcements, a message board and the following file areas: OTA Publications, Clean Air Act, Household Hazardous Waste (HHW), and Toxics Use Reduction Act (TURA).
