Cloud motion vectors (WINDS) are computed by measuring the movement of clouds over a specific time period using manual or automated techniques. WINDS are derived from Visible and Infrared Spin Scan Radiometer (VISSR) images. The VISSR is operated on the Geostationary Operational Environment Satellite (GOES).
The WINDS are derived over oceanic areas at 2.5 degree longitude and latitude grids taken from images no more than 2 hours apart. Approximately 750 wind vectors are archived each day.
