Technology Description:

Photovac introduces a unique new hand-held Gas Chromatograph, called the SnapShot, for measuring Toxic Gases and Vapors.

The exclusive Photovac Photoionization Detector (PID) provides superior sensitivity for measurement of a wide variety of compounds from PPM to PPB levels.

No prior experience or training is required to operate the SnapShot. Interchangeable Applications Modules are pre-programmed for multiple target chemicals and contain the appropriate GC column, Method, Operating Software, and Compound Library.

Isothermal capillary columns give accurate compound identification and quantification.

Built-in software allows automatic internal valve injection of calibrant and sample, and precolumn/backflush chromatography ensures rapid analytical cycle times without interference from high boiling- range compounds with late elution times.

Sample and Calibrant are drawn into the SnapShot via the built-in pump and subsequently injected automatically onto the GC column.

Separated compounds are identified and listed with concentrations on the SnapShot's Liquid Crystal Display (LCD).

The SnapShot can be left unattended for continuous monitoring and the data stored in the built-in datalogger. The data can then be downloaded via the RS-232 serial port to a printer or computer.

Complete with snap-on battery pack and replaceable Carrier Gas Cartridge, the SnapShot weighs under 8.5 lbs.
Performance Status/
Limitations:

Performance Status:

The SnapShot was introduced at the Pittsburgh Conference in 1993. Since that time, the instrument has been used extensively in the Refinery and Petrochemical Industry, especially for Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, and Xylene isomers.

The USEPA in Washington is evaluating the SnapShot for site investigation of petroleum product vapor emission from storage tanks. A paper on this work is in preparation.

The PE Photovac SnapShot GC has been approved by regulators in New York State to be used in place of laboratory analysis of Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, and Xylenes (BTEX), as well as, Trichloroethylene (TCE), and Perchloroethylene (PCE), saving thousands of dollars in laboratory fees.

          Limitations:

By virtue of simplicity of operation, the user can not add compounds to an Application Module. The idea is that the operator does not need to be a chromatographer.

There is no provision for syringe injection of calibrant or sample. All injections are fully automatic.
