Technology Description:

The detector tube system consists of a hand-operated, volumetric piston pump and sealed glass detector tubes filled with a reagent specifically sensitive to the target gas. The tube tips are broken, the tube inserted into the pump, and an air sample drawn by pulling and locking the pump's handle. A precise volume of air (100cc) is drawn through the tube by the pump's vacuum. If the target gas is present it will cause a color change to occur in the tube's reagent layer. The length of the color stain is proportional to the gas concentration and will allow direct measurement by means of a printed scale on the tube. It is completely portable with powerless operation and provides direct reading grab samples for air quality determination. System accuracy is +/-25% of reading. Detector tubes are available for over 290 gases and vapors including common industrial gases and solvents.
Performance Status/
Limitations:

Performance Status:

Detector tubes have been used for about 75 years, with the first being developed in 1919 at Harvard. They are used by OSHA inspectors to access worker exposures to toxic gases and vapors. A certification program is currently conducted by the Safety Equipment Institute (SEI), which at this writing includes 23 gases and vapors. The tubes are tested for accuracy by an independent laboratory to American National Standards Institute (ANSI 102-1990) currently under SEI.

          Limitations:

The tubes have temperature limitations of 0 to 40 deg. C and relative humidity limits of (usually) 10 to 90% RH. Many have interferences listed in the instruction sheets. Color blindness of the user is a limitation with certain tubes.
