Abstract:

The National Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH) has developed sampling and analytical methods for monitoring occupational exposures to toxic substances in air and biological samples. The NIOSH Manual of Analytical Methods (NMAM) is a collection of over 250 methods for sampling and analysis of contaminants in workplace air, and in the blood and urine of workers who are occupationally exposed. These methods have been developed specifically to have adequate sensitivity to detect the lowest concentrations as regulated by OSHA and recommended by NIOSH, and sufficient range to measure concentrations exceeding safe levels of exposure. These methods are arranged alphabetically by name.

The NMAM is available in both printed format and electronic database. Printed copies can be purchased from the Government Printing Office (GPO). Electronic copies can also be purchased from various vendors, including the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH).

In addition, copies of selected methods can be downloaded from the NMAM World Wide Web site, under the following categories:
        • Asbestos
        • Particulates (dust)
        • Lead
        • Elements in air
        • Silica
        • Biological Samples
